Program

Antonin Dvořák: String Quartet No. 5 in F minor, Op. 9, B 37

Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 5 in F minor, Op. 9 (1873) is an early, somber work marked by intense emotion and a return to classical quartet traditions, featuring a

dramatic first movement

, a lyrical

Largetto

(used later in his Romance), a

melancholic waltz

-like Scherzo with a bright Trio, and a varied Finale, all revolving around the key of F minor, showcasing Dvořák’s budding mastery despite initial player rejection.

Edgar Elgar: Salut D’Amour

Elgar’s Salut d’Amour (Love’s Greeting) is a short, sweet, and sincere romantic piece, originally for violin and piano, composed in 1888 as a musical love token for his fiancée,

Alice Roberts

, featuring a lilting melody with poignant harmonies and often described as evoking warm, gentle, and nostalgic feelings, a beloved “love poem” that became a huge success and inspired many arrangements

Carlos Gardel: Por Una Cabeza

Por Una Cabeza (Spanish for “By a Head”) is a famous 1935 tango by

Carlos Gardel and Alfredo Le Pera

that uses a horse racing metaphor to compare the addictive thrill of gambling with the intoxicating pull of a passionate woman, lamenting a love lost by a narrow margin, much like losing a race “by a head”. Composed shortly before Gardel’s tragic death, it became a timeless classic, widely recognized from films like

Scent of a Woman

.
